The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Succeed at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Might Solve This

Each time a major awards ceremony approaches, you'll find a demand to include fresh award types to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of fans dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. So would tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent and significant. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that cinema institutions don’t do it. Yet it remains a necessary evil within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Think about these outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked for anything that year
  • Another imaginative release missed out in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment that year
  • Limited numbers of logic titles managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often modest productions, however the design behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among the most-played games globally maintaining this status for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience challenges popular creative games competing to become most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. One could readily select multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these represent titles without proper classification in important events. Logic title developers are working at the demanding boundary game development, producing among most fundamental forms of the video game form. Similar to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
